The Big Butterfly Count – Record Numbers of Butterflies and Dragonflies in the Pocket Park

Record Numbers of Butterflies and Dragonflies  in the Pocket Park

The continuing warm weather and the wildflowers planted in the park have encouraged record numbers of these beautiful insects in the pocket park.  To see them at their best find a sunny day and watch them feeding on the flowers, patrolling the hedgerows or skimming across the pond. See how many you can identify. There is a free chart for butterflies you can download here http://www.bigbutterflycount.org/idchart

Butterfly count

Until 10th August the Big Butterfly Count is taking place so why don’t you count the butterflies you see, whether in the park, in your garden or wherever you go? The big butterfly count is a nationwide survey aimed at helping us assess the health of our environment. It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world’s biggest survey of butterflies. Butterflies react very quickly to change in their environment which makes them excellent biodiversity indicators. Butterfly declines are an early warning for other wildlife losses. Find out more about the project, free apps  and other ways to submit your sightings here: http://www.bigbutterflycount.org/about

What’s happening in Rectory Farm Pocket Park in 2014?

We are pleased to report that we had a successful Annual General Meeting last Saturday. Tim Ward from the Public Art Project brought his designs along for us to see. We discussed details of locations of bridge & signs and the photos & information to be included on them.

We have copies of designs for us to share at the next Resident’s Association meeting which will be at the Rectory Farm Community Centre on Tuesday, February 18th at 7:30pm. Please come along and see them…

Here’s a preview of the designs:

Download them full size here: Page 1, Page 2, Page 3, Page 4

In the summer we hope to put on a children’s activity in the Pocket Park as we have done in the past couple of years. Keep checking this blog for updates as we will be asking you to choose the activity with a vote!

We’ll also be planning regular work-parties to keep the park tidy, planting, weeding paths etc…. Please have a look at the Provisional Diary. The first one is March 1st 2-4 pm.

We love to see all ages & stages using the Pocket Park & any help is appreciated. If you’d like to know more or join the Pocket Park Group do contact us, or come along to one of our events.

Pocket Park 2013 Activities – Have your Say…

10 2 12 (5)

Brrrr… It’s cold outside! It’s a beautiful time of year in the Pocket Park though!

The Pocket Park AGM took place on Saturday to plan for the coming year. After several successful events last year we thought we would ask the excellent Park Ranger from Brixworth Country Park to come back for another family activity afternoon this summer.

We had Mini Beast Safari, Pond Dipping, Owls and more last year and this year we thought you would like to decide the activity!

Please vote in our poll if you would like to us to have: HABITATSNATURES RECYCLERS, ORIENTEERING or WORLD OF PLANTS (click to read about each one)

Whichever you choose will be an excellent afternoon in the Pocket Park for every age.

Please continue to send us your photos of the park
