Record Numbers of Butterflies and Dragonflies  in the Pocket Park

The continuing warm weather and the wildflowers planted in the park have encouraged record numbers of these beautiful insects in the pocket park.  To see them at their best find a sunny day and watch them feeding on the flowers, patrolling the hedgerows or skimming across the pond. See how many you can identify. There is a free chart for butterflies you can download here http://www.bigbutterflycount.org/idchart

Butterfly count

Until 10th August the Big Butterfly Count is taking place so why don’t you count the butterflies you see, whether in the park, in your garden or wherever you go? The big butterfly count is a nationwide survey aimed at helping us assess the health of our environment. It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world’s biggest survey of butterflies. Butterflies react very quickly to change in their environment which makes them excellent biodiversity indicators. Butterfly declines are an early warning for other wildlife losses. Find out more about the project, free apps  and other ways to submit your sightings here: http://www.bigbutterflycount.org/about
